Northern Lights Viewing

Northern Lights Viewing – visitors passing through Norway during the winter (from November to March) will likely want to trek to the northern parts of that country to view a unique phenomenon: the Northern Lights – which bathe the sky in various bright colors at night (usually between 6 pm and 2 am). They are actually solar winds that meet the atmosphere in a zone around the magnetic North Pole, forming arches, waves and curls of light moving across the sky, with sudden rays of light shooting down from space. Most of the Northern Lights outbursts visible in Northern Scandinavia are green, but large outbursts can also include other colors.
Those visiting this part of Norway can also sample the local Sami culture, and indulge in dog sledding and reindeer rides. The town of Kirkenes (a 2-hour direct flight from Oslo) is a favored starting off point to see the Northern Lights.
